Extension & Replacement with Floating Wharf

In February 2017 we have completed the upgrade and expansion of the facility. We would like to express our warmest gratitude and appreciation for your support, time and effort to help us to succeed, and also provide you with some information about the development.

Killcare Marina is seeking expressions of interest from customers who may be interested in special long-term berthing arrangement.

Project Brief

The proposed works included:

• Installation of Floating extension to the existing jetty for a distance of ~33 meters;
• Demolition of the section of the jetty for a distance of ~48 meters;
• Installation of Floating replacement to the existing jetty.
• Upgrade and installation of the Wharf systems (power, lighting, firefighting equipment and water).

Floating Wharf

Marinas can essentially be constructed in one of two ways: fixed or floating.

Consistent with modern practice in tidal areas a floating structure for the marina berths was considered as the preferred option. This is consistent with the management objectives contained within Brisbane Water Plan of Management.

• The ~78 m of floating walkway (~3m extra wide) and finger pontoons (~0.9 m wide) were designed in accordance with AS3962-2001 Guidelines for Design of Marinas (AS3962) and the Engineering Standards and Guidelines for Maritime Structures by NSW Maritime Authority.
• The floating marina is restrained in place by vertical pylons.
• The wharf pylons are HPE cased steel industrial pylons; pylons in the middle of double berths are HPE cased steel pylons as well. Pylons in the middle of double berth have sliding fixtures for berth ropes installed to allow sufficient vertical movement of the ropes with the tide.
• Access to the walkway from the jetty and from the barge is provided by the 2 gangway access ramps, made of aluminum frame and plates.
• The floating wharf has substantially less visual impact than the replaced jetty.

Wharf Systems

• We have completely replaced / modified the electrical power supply system.
• We have installed service pedestals to supply water and individually metered power to all berths. The connection is secured.

Wharf Lighting

The old jetty lighting was designed and constructed in 1965 and comprised of the 2.5 m lighting poles.

Consistent with modern practice, we replaced the old lighting in the area of the walkway with minimal and energy efficient lighting, sufficient to provide for safe pedestrian access to berths and for safe navigation in and out of the facility.

The new lighting is located in a manner that minimises light emission from the floating wharf, makes navigation safe and does not interfere with neighborhood amenity when viewed from Brisbane Water, any adjoining public land and from adjoining residences.

Swing Moorings Affected

There were three of our swing moorings (SM-01, SM-02, SM-03) which were affected and were relocated.

Berth Plan

All the berths became

• Wider. Navigating vessels in and out became much easier;
• Further out into deeper water;
• Accessible from the walkway, which has a 0.4 m freeboard (pontoon height above water surface), providing easier and safer access including improved access for the disabled;
• Equipped with a dedicated set of cleats. Mooring ropes setup became more precise, as there is no longer need to allow for tide level changes. Ropes became generally shorter;
• Serviced by an individually metered and secured power point from the nearest utility pedestal. Water tap is located on the pedestal.
